Overview
In the English Language and Literature Department, we dedicate our efforts to equipping our students with the communication and critical thinking skills to be confident individuals. To us, this means developing students who will be able to use language effectively to understand and communicate ideas as well as explore issues that will raise their awareness of the different ways of perceiving the world.

Key Department Programmes / Activities
No. | Title of Programme / Activity | Brief Description |
1. | Print-Screen-Stage Programme (PS2) | The PS2 Programme aims to develop in students the skills of effective communication, collaboration and creative thinking. All Secondary One students study a novel over the course of the year before watching its film adaptation and finally adapting it for a stage production. As part of their preparation, students learn various skills such as script writing, acting, directing, make-up, set, costume and sound design. At the end of the programme, they put up a dramatic performance before an audience and celebrate their new found confidence. |
2. | Simply Speaking | Simply Speaking aims to develop students who are confident and effective speakers. At Secondary One, students engage in Reader’s Theatre, a style of theatre whereby actors rely on vocal expressiveness to tell a story. At Secondary Two, students embark on News@TSS, whereby they produce a news story featuring their interviews with others. Last but not least, at Secondary Three they embark on Let’s Talk, researching and putting together a forum with a panel of speakers. |
3. | Morning Programme @ TSS | Our students spend an hour each week engaging in reading and viewing activities as well as self / critical reflection on topics which have been specially selected from all across the disciplines. All upper secondary classes also send two representatives to engage in a public speaking competition in front of the entire school on a weekly basis. |
4. | Spell-Off Bee Championship (Lower Secondary) | The Spell-Off Bee Championship is a yearly Inter-House competition aimed at reinforcing our students’ literacy development across the curriculum as students battle it out to represent their respective Houses in spelling challenging words drawn from all across the subject disciplines. |
